Strengthening the Capacities of Illiterate Women in La Paz, Bolivia

Despite advances in literacy in Bolivia, many women in peri-urban and rural areas still face significant barriers to education. Factors such as poverty, domestic workload and lack of educational opportunities perpetuate their exclusion. In this context, literacy becomes a key factor for their empowerment and autonomy.

This project is developed in partnership with Educo and the Fundación Centro de Cultura Popular (FCCP). Its objective is to improve the literacy, mathematics and digital skills of women in vulnerable situations through a flexible and inclusive pedagogical model.

Intervention Strategy

The project implemented an innovative methodology that combined the use of the FOCUS application, printed materials and group sessions, allowing for progressive and personalized learning. To overcome technological limitations, a rotating system of tablet use and individualized supervision by trained facilitators was adopted.

An initial diagnosis was carried out to segment participants into three groups according to their literacy level, ensuring a tailored approach to their needs. In addition, flexible schedules were established to facilitate their participation and learning based on everyday life situations was promoted.

Results in 2024

This year, the pilot stage was developed with the participation of 23 women, 10 of whom successfully completed all the activities, achieving competencies equivalent to the third grade of elementary school. In addition, 70% of the participants acquired basic digital skills, improving their access to virtual environments and technological tools.

It was also possible to demonstrate:

  • Development of reading, writing and mathematical calculation skills.
  • Application of knowledge in family economy and basic transactions.
  • Strengthening of autonomous learning and confidence in their abilities.
  • Improvements in their work and productive performance.

Next Steps

To strengthen and expand the impact of the project, we will work on:

  • Expanding access to technological devices and improving digital infrastructure.
  • Develop modules for the educational continuity of graduate students.
  • Strengthen strategic alliances to ensure the program's sustainability.
